Obituary for Don Henderson Pulley

In case you didn’t know Don Henderson Pulley nicely, he was very quiet. However should you did know him, you already know he didn’t mince phrases or sugarcoat issues. You at all times knew the place you stood with him. Don was cussed. He was unbiased. He was loyal – so long as you didn’t cross him. When he left us on January 20, 2022, we thought lengthy and onerous about how he would have favored to be remembered.

Don was born on August 24, 1957 to the late Howard David and Nell Fletcher Pulley, Sr. Don was additionally preceded in loss of life by two brothers; a twin – John William Pulley and Howard David Pulley, Jr., and his spouse of 32 years, Susie Pulley.

Don Pulley is survived by son, Brian (Ashley) Pulley of Springfield, daughter Jodi (Todd) Ballard of Springfield, sisters Donna Smith and Cindy (Harold) Joyce, each of Springfield, and grandchildren Ava & Henry Pulley, Tate and Emri Ballard, and several other particular nieces and nephews.

Visitation was held on the Robertson County Funeral House on Friday, January 28 at 10:00a.m. till the hour of service at 2:00p.m. Burial befell at Springfield Memorial Gardens.

In case you appeared carefully at Don, you’d discover an ear that simply didn’t look fairly proper. However you in all probability wouldn’t ask him about it, since you’d be scared to. Don was burned and injured in 1993 at a memorable hearth through which the ceiling partially collapsed, hitting him within the head and knocking him to a different flooring under. In case you cease by the Springfield Hearth Corridor immediately, you’d see Don’s hand-light within the trophy case used at this incident.

Don Pulley lived and breathed firefighting. He was so happy with turning into an entry degree fireman in 1982, and dealing his approach as much as Hearth Engineer, Firefighter II, Hearth Lieutenant and at last, Hearth Captain “C” Shift. He didn’t get these promotions by brown-nosing (he’d let you know), however by his personal benefit. His resume of battled fires will encourage nostalgia in long-time Springfield residents – just like the Memorial Boulevard Pizza Hut, the Hinkle & Moss Constructing, and paint line fires at Frigidaire and Unarco, amongst many others.

Don was a morale booster on the firehall, and impressed “pleasant” competitions in opposition to members on different shifts. You’d discover his trophies displayed in a particular place introduced again from the “Guts & Glory” Competitions held on the Nashville Hearth Academy. And a few years later, he’d additionally present you a photograph Tate and Henry, two of his grandchildren, sporting his hearth hat – whether or not you requested him to or not.

He was all man. Like a grasp griller, engaged on a automobile within the driveway with family and friends whereas listening to John Ward asserting the College of Tennessee ballgames and ingesting beer kinda man. If there wasn’t a sport on, you’d hear WKDF loudly. Loud as in if 30 decibels equal a whisper, and 120 may do quick ear hurt, he would love it round 90.

And about that automobile within the driveway… His satisfaction and pleasure was a ‘71 Dodge Charger that started off painted brown, then obtained a charcoal grey colour after one wreck, and later sweet apple purple when Susie Pulley received a maintain of it. At one level within the lifetime of The Charger, it was being pushed by 16-year-old Brian Pulley, the place reportedly, Don would come to the highschool and verify the oil ranges on it to make sure it was being taken care of. He favored his autos meticulously clear. Brian was at all times the tire and wheel man, and to today, by no means received it to the extent of perfection that Don required.

Finishing his man resume, Don added a love of NASCAR. Richard Petty, to be extra particular. And in addition craftsmanship and ingenuity. He constructed his personal home, and will even let you know the variety of nail holes and the place he positioned each one. He additionally developed a instrument to rapidly launch a car hood whereas an engine was in flames. He was an avid reader, and will advocate a hair-raising thriller novel.

Don was fast witted, and had many sayings, most of them not match to print, however we all know you’ll bear in mind them at simply the apopros occasions. “Apopros. Oh, is {that a} school phrase you simply utilized in my obituary?”, he’d in all probability say. “Let me dig 1 / 4 out of my pocket for what that phrase is value.” Or, you may also recall him saying, “You’re slicker than socks on a rooster.” Yep. That’s about all of Don’s sayings {that a} newspaper may print.

Don didn’t say he cherished folks a lot, but when he was slicing up with you, scaring you, or pranking you, you knew you meant so much to him.

Don met Susie when she labored at EMS on the time the hearth corridor and EMS had been housed in the identical constructing. He known as her “mushroom head.” As a result of, you already know, he kinda favored her. Quite a bit. In order that they received married. Together with Susie got here 11-year-old Jodi (Clinard) Ballard in tow, through which Don lovingly accepted as his personal. For a few years, Don had a schedule of bringing flowers house to Susie after each firehall shift. And these weren’t simply any $5 bin blended flowers, there was that means behind every alternative. When Susie went House after 32 years of marriage, Don introduced them to Jodi.

In case you got here by the home on a day a storm was rolling in, you’d discover him on the porch, in a rocking chair watching the surroundings God was orchestrating. He’d almost definitely be smoking a menthol (however by no means a 100 – they tasted like cat ____ (insert a colourful phrase of your alternative right here). We hope that for Don’s sake, they’ve Kools in heaven. As a result of in response to him, cigarettes haven’t tasted nearly as good since.

floral squareIn case you’d like to recollect Don in a particular approach, you may toast him when you’re grilling and having a chilly one. Or you may make a donation in his reminiscence to considered one of his favourite organizations – United Manner of Higher Nashville or St. Jude’s Youngsters’s Analysis Hospital. And on cool evenings once you’ve received a hearth stepping into a pit, should you look actually shut, you simply may see his mustached smile proper there within the flames.
